The Vienna Saxonphonic Orchestra has set itself the task of opening up new sound worlds to the public and of presenting both well-known works in arrangements and also mainly original literature for this comparably rare instrumentation. Conducted by the Swiss-born Lars Mlekusch, associate professor for saxophone, chamber music and the performance practice of contemporary music at Vienna Conservatoire Private University, this debut CD of the young ensemble offers arrangements of the Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas and mainly works written especially for the VSO by contemporary composers: Solastalgia by Duncan Youngerman, OtMoor 2 by Hannes Kerschbaumer, Stormy Weather by Johannes Berauer, Frameless Pictures by Christian Maurer and Polychrome 1994 by the Frenchman Thierry Alla. It is a magnificent journey through spheres from Classicism to jazz, from counterpoint via quarter tones to improvisation, from Austria via Great Britain to Africa, in short a journey through the entire world of music.
